These are not 'factory ' belts. Each belt is made here at the Harness Room.
|
A single craftsman utilising the saddler's extensive knowledge of his craft and material and using traditional tools makes each belt.
Hand tools used include the plough knife, round knife, screw crease and various edging tools. Hand stitching is carried out where required.

The craftsman selects the leather and strip cuts using a plough knife. He then trims this to size with a round knife. Each belt is made to its own design and hand edged on both the 'flesh' and 'grain' side ( the 'under' and 'outer' or 'top' side). Vegetable dye is applied to the edges, which are hand rubbed using natural jute to create a fine finish. The appropriate hole punch is selected to punch the holes by hand. The buckles and loops are in the majority of designs stitched in, either using special equipment suited to the heavier leather or hand stitched using the traditional saddler's awl according to the style of belt.
Your McRostie belt will soon become
like an old friend.
